Yango has integrated Flutterwave’s payment infrastructure into its app in Zambia, letting customers pay for taxi rides and food deliveries with bank cards instead of cash.
The partnership went live today, making Flutterwave the payment processor for card transactions on Yango’s platform. Users can now add their cards to the app and complete payments without handling cash or leaving the platform to make bank transfers.
Yango operates both ride-hailing and food delivery services in Zambia, competing with platforms like Uber and Bolt. The company is part of Yango Group, a global tech company that runs similar services across emerging markets.
Cash remains the dominant payment method in Zambia, especially for everyday services like taxis and food orders. Many platforms accept mobile money, but card payments have been less common due to infrastructure limitations and security concerns.
Flutterwave tackles both of these problems. This Nigerian payment company is well-known throughout Africa for securely processing credit card payments. Their system is built to manage the unique difficulties of digital payments in developing countries, such as unreliable internet connections, currency exchange, and preventing fraud.
For Yango, adding reliable card payments removes friction for customers who prefer cards over cash or mobile money. It also makes the platform more attractive to tourists and foreign residents who may not have local mobile money accounts but do have international bank cards.
The partnership also benefits Yango’s restaurant partners and drivers by enabling digital payments instead of cash transactions. This makes reconciliation faster and lowers the risks associated with handling a lot of cash.
Kabanda Chewe, Yango’s Country Head in Zambia, said the integration strengthens the platform’s payment capabilities while supporting Zambia’s shift toward digital commerce. “This is an important step in improving the overall experience for customers and helping restaurants grow through reliable digital transactions,” he said.

Iyembi Nkanza, Flutterwave’s Country Head, framed the partnership as part of the company’s broader push to make payments seamless across Africa.
“We’re empowering Zambians with secure, convenient payment options that remove friction from everyday transactions,” he said.

Zambia is using more digital services, like food delivery and online shopping, but the payment systems need to catch up. This partnership shows that payment companies are putting money into Zambia because more people are making online purchases.
Yango has announced that it will keep adding new payment methods and service features to create a “connected service ecosystem” in Zambia. Currently, their main goal is to encourage more users to use digital payment options instead of relying on cash.
