Tesla Energy Ventures Limited has been granted a licence by Ofgem to supply electricity across Great Britain. The licence took effect on Wednesday after an approval process that started in July 2025.
The licence covers both domestic and non-domestic customers, meaning Tesla can now sell electricity directly to UK homes and businesses.
This puts Tesla in direct competition with some of Britain’s biggest energy suppliers, including Octopus Energy, British Gas, and EDF.

Tesla already has skin in the UK energy game. Its subsidiary Tesla Motors Limited holds an electricity generation licence, and Powerwall battery owners can already sell excess solar energy back to the grid.
The new supply licence is a natural extension of that setup — letting Tesla close the loop and retail electricity directly to customers.
The timing is notable for consumers. Energy prices in Britain have climbed following the war in Iran, with many households anxious about rising bills.
Most UK households are shielded from the full impact of higher gas prices until July, thanks to regulated tariffs. But that protection has an expiry date.
Tesla’s entry gives consumers another option in the retail energy market, though whether it will offer cheaper rates remains to be seen.
The company has experience in this space elsewhere. Tesla Energy already operates in energy markets in Australia and the United States.
Tesla’s UK car sales have been under pressure. They dropped 8.9% year-on-year in 2025, hurt by competition from lower-cost Chinese electric vehicles.
There has also been a consumer backlash in some markets linked to Elon Musk’s public political activity.
The energy business offers Tesla a different lane in the UK — one that isn’t dependent on vehicle sales.
Tesla has not yet announced pricing, tariffs, or a specific launch date for its electricity supply service in Great Britain.
The Ofgem licence approval was confirmed in an official statement from the regulator this week.
