OpenAI is merging its ChatGPT app, coding tool Codex, and browser into a single desktop app. The company is calling it a “superapp.” The goal is to simplify its product line and improve the user experience.
The move was confirmed by OpenAI on Thursday, following a Wall Street Journal report. It marks a major shift in strategy for the company.
Chief of Applications Fidji Simo will lead sales of the new product. President Greg Brockman, who currently oversees computing efforts, will temporarily manage the product overhaul and related team changes.
Last year, OpenAI rolled out several standalone products, many backed by Microsoft. Several of those products did not gain traction with users and caused internal confusion about the company’s direction.
The new superapp will focus on “agentic AI.” These are AI systems that can work independently on a desktop, handling tasks like writing code or processing data without needing constant human input.
Unlike standard chatbots, agentic AI systems are designed to act more like autonomous workers. They take on tasks and work toward a goal on their own.
OpenAI and Anthropic are now competing hard for enterprise customers. Both companies are trying to sell AI productivity tools to businesses.
OpenAI did not prioritize business sales early on. But it changed course after seeing Anthropic find success with products like Claude Code and Cowork.
Anthropic has built a strong foothold in the enterprise market. OpenAI is now pushing aggressively to close that gap.
Both companies are also reported to be eyeing public listings by the end of the year. Each has made large revenue promises to investors.
The superapp is designed to bring all of OpenAI’s tools into one place. The company hopes this will make it easier for developers and business users to work with its products.
OpenAI launched a standalone desktop version of Codex earlier this year. That tool will now be folded into the larger unified app.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the superapp plans. OpenAI confirmed the report through a spokesperson on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
