Pre-Market Briefing on Sept 23: Vicor Soars 19.85% as Growth Guidance Doubles; Flash PMI in Focus Tonight

The last session was Tuesday, September 22, and the three indexes did not move together: the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.45% to 27,244.28 for a second straight record close, while the Dow fell 0.36% and the S&P 500 finished flat, down 0.01%. The stock in focus is Vicor (VICR), up 19.85% at $268.34, market value moving from $10.2B to $12.2B in a day, about 16.3 points above its own industry. The flash composite PMI lands at 13:45 and Fed Governor Barr speaks at 14:05; the US opens at 13:30, so all of it falls inside the session. Academy is the Wednesday sector teardown: advanced packaging. Data is as of the September 22 US close, and all times are UTC.

Today's Market: Money Went One Way, and the Three Indexes Split

The Nasdaq rose 0.45% for a second straight record close, while the Dow fell 0.36% and the S&P 500 closed down 0.01%. One up, two down: the money was selective.

Memory was the engine. SanDisk (SNDK) rose 6.82% to $1,887.04 and Micron (MU) rose 5.00% to $1,096.16, taking Micron to a $1.24T market cap. The trigger was a first research initiation on SanDisk, on the argument that NAND flash now counts as AI infrastructure. ⚠ The source does not name the firm, and gives no rating or price target.

The other side of the Dow's weakness was oil. ⚠ Reports suggested the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within seven days: that is a report and an expectation, not something that has happened. Brent fell as much as 2.1% and WTI as much as 2.6% intraday, pressuring energy names.

Stock in Focus, Vicor (VICR): A License and the Guidance Raise It Paid For

It closed at $268.34 and market value went from $10.2B to $12.2B in a day. Volume ran 1.969 million shares, 2.29x the 90-day average, for about $530M of turnover.

The driver was a single license. After Monday's close the company lifted guidance for third-quarter sequential revenue growth from about 10% to over 20%, the increment coming from a fourth non-exclusive Vertical Power Delivery license. It also bought two New Hampshire sites to take module capacity to roughly three times its current level.

Two qualifiers cannot be dropped: the licensee and the royalty rate are not named, and the full picture only arrives with the third-quarter report; and what was raised is the growth rate, not revenue itself. Reading "guidance doubled" as "revenue doubled" is a different claim.

Five-Dimension Score: trend position 66, peer strength 100, peer rank 100, sector valuation 41, volatility control 26.

→ ⚠ This shape is lopsided, not filled out. Peer rank and peer strength both sit at a maximum 100, but sector valuation is only 41 and volatility control, at 26, is the weakest of the five, with two dimensions below 50. The strength here is in how it compares with peers, not in how steady it is.

The supporting name, MPWR, rose 8.06%. A different answer to the same AI power problem: it makes power chips and sells them to server builders, and this month signed a long-term 300mm wafer agreement in Singapore, with production from early 2027.

Peer Comparison: 16.3 Points Above Its Own Industry, but Two of Six Closed Lower

The six names are grouped by what they do (AI server power and connectivity hardware), not by exchange classification. They run from Vicor +19.85% down to Cisco −4.50%, so the ends sit 24.35 points apart.

Vicor finished 11.79 points above second-placed MPWR.
→ ⚠ Two things read separately here. Its own industry, Nasdaq hardware, equipment and parts, averaged +3.50% that day, a positive number, so Vicor led higher rather than moving against its sector. But two of the six charted names closed lower (ANET −0.11%, CSCO −4.50%), so this was not a whole group moving together either.

One-Minute Concept: Excess Gain

Take a stock's move for the day, subtract its industry's average move that day, and what is left is the excess gain.

1. Today's reading. Vicor closed up 19.85%, its industry averaged +3.50%, leaving an excess of about 16.3 points.

2. What that piece is. It usually corresponds to what the company itself did, today the license and the guidance raise; the industry's 3.50% is the part every peer had.

3. How to use it. Read the two separately and you can tell whether a name was carried up by its industry or moved on its own. ⚠ Mind the basis: what you subtract has to be its own industry classification.

What to Watch Today: The Flash PMI, and the Components That Price December

The flash composite PMI lands at 13:45, Atlanta Fed business inflation expectations at 14:00, and Fed Governor Barr speaks at 14:05. The US opens at 13:30, so all three fall inside the session. No CPI and no payrolls this week, so the calendar belongs to Fed speakers; durable goods orders follow Friday.

The composite PMI puts services and manufacturing output on the same ruler and is the earliest growth reading of each month. The output components say how hot the economy is; the price components say whether costs have turned. Both arrive in the same report.

The four August flash readings were services activity 56.8, composite output 56.0, manufacturing PMI 53.2 and manufacturing output 51.9. ⚠ These are diffusion index points, with 50 as the dividing line. They are not year-on-year growth rates.

The heat is not evenly spread. Services activity leads at 56.8 while manufacturing output sits only 1.9 points above the dividing line: August's growth came almost entirely from services. The capacity build in AI hardware and memory has to land in that line eventually.
→ The Fed turned back to tightening last Wednesday, to 3.75%–4.00%, its first hike since 2023. Barr is a Fed Governor.

Drill-Down: Four Months Higher, and the First Growth Reading Since the Hike

The four flash readings of the composite output PMI run May 51.7, June 52.2, July 53.6 and August 56.0, an increase of 4.3 points.

Momentum was building before the hike. Today is the fifth reading and the first growth number since the Fed moved.
→ 🔴 Read it alongside the price components of the same report: input cost inflation slowed in August to its slowest since February. They ask firms whether input and selling prices rose this month, which is why they turn before the official inflation data. If they reverse today, a December hike is repriced at once, and when the discount rate moves, the most expensive AI and memory names go first.

Academy: Sector Teardown, Advanced Packaging

On an AI accelerator the transistors were finished long ago. What queues up now is the step that stacks them and wires them together. One-year price range (52-week high divided by 52-week low, at the September 22 close): Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) 1.8, Onto Innovation (ONTO) 3.2, Amkor Technology (AMKR) 3.4, and Applied Materials (AMAT) and Teradyne (TER) at 3.8 each.

One of the five sells capacity, one sells the work itself, and three sell the machines bought when capacity is added. TSMC is the one being queued for, its revenue is the most visible, and its price stayed inside a 1.8x band all year. The tools, metrology and test names are paid for the act of expanding, so a change in that pace reprices the whole expectation.
→ ⚠ This measures how far the price swung, not a return or a valuation multiple. A wider band does not mean a worse company; it is not a quality ranking.

One-Minute Concept: How to Tell Whether a Company Has Pricing Power

1. Start with what it sells and to whom. One AI demand lands on this chain as three different businesses: TSMC sells slots in its capacity, Applied Materials and Teradyne sell the machines bought during an expansion, and Amkor sells the service of doing the work.

2. Then ask how hard it is to replace. The step queued for, where the customer cannot redesign around it, sets its own price; machines can be quoted against each other and deferred a quarter, so the customer's budget sets the price.

3. Finally ask when the money arrives. Capacity revenue is continuous, machine revenue comes in waves, which is why the latter is repriced several times a year.

A transferable test: given an unfamiliar company, ask whether it is the one being queued for or the one queuing to sell. The first holds pricing power; the second rides the cycle.

Company Profile: Amkor Technology (AMKR)

What it does: once the wafer leaves the foundry, Amkor turns it into a part that can be soldered onto a board. It is one of the largest independent packaging and test firms and the only large listed one based in the United States. Second-quarter revenue was $1.90B, up 26%, with 82% of it from advanced packaging.

Upside and risk: investment in the new Arizona campus has grown to about $12B, moving capacity onshore. But that is capital expenditure it carries itself, guided at $2.5B to $3.0B for 2026. ⚠ If orders come late, the depreciation still arrives on time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Vicor rose 19.85%. Was that the company or the whole group?
A: Mostly the company. It ran about 16.3 points above its own industry, from the license and the guidance raise. ⚠ But two of the six charted names closed lower, so not a whole group rising together.

Q: Guidance went from 10% to over 20%. Does that mean revenue doubles?
A: No. What was raised is guidance for third-quarter sequential revenue growth, not revenue itself. ⚠ And the licensee and the royalty rate are not named, so the full picture waits for the third-quarter report.

Q: Peer rank is a maximum 100. Does that make it a strong stock?
A: It tops that one dimension. ⚠ On the same chart sector valuation is only 41 and volatility control only 26, two dimensions below 50, so the shape is lopsided, not filled out.

Q: The composite PMI is 56.0. Does that mean the economy grew 56%?
A: No. These are diffusion index points, with 50 as the dividing line, not a growth rate. 56.0 means expansion, and the structure is uneven: services 56.8 against manufacturing output at only 51.9.

Q: In the packaging chain, is a 3.8x band worse than a 1.8x band?
A: That is not what it measures. 🔴 The band measures how far the price swung, not quality. TSMC is queued for and its revenue is the most visible, so it stayed inside 1.8x; the others are paid for the act of expanding, so a change in that pace widens the band.

Ulasan Pendapatan Tesla Q1 2026: Pengiriman Pulih, Namun Kualitas Margin Tetap Menjadi Ujian Sebenarnya

Ulasan Pendapatan Tesla Q1 2026: Pengiriman Pulih, Namun Kualitas Margin Tetap Menjadi Ujian Sebenarnya
