CFD Margin and Leverage Explained: Formulas & Examples
CFD margin is the collateral required to open and maintain a leveraged trading position. It determines how much money must support the trade, while the position’s full market exposure determines its profit or loss.
Having enough margin to open a position does not mean your account can comfortably withstand an adverse price movement. To understand that difference, you need to connect five figures: position value, account equity, used margin, free margin and margin level.
How CFD Margin and Leverage Fit Together
For a straightforward percentage-based margin calculation:
Required margin = position value × margin rate
The corresponding leverage ratio is:
Leverage = position value ÷ required margin
A 5% margin requirement therefore corresponds to 20:1 leverage. A position worth $20,000 requires $1,000 in margin under that assumption.
Leverage changes how much collateral supports a given exposure. It does not change the dollar profit or loss of an otherwise identical position. If the quantity traded and the price movement stay the same, the trading P&L stays the same.
Actual calculations can include instrument-specific factors, currency conversions and exposure tiers. Use the applicable contract specification and the margin quoted on the order ticket.
How to Calculate CFD Margin From Lots
Consider a hypothetical gold CFD with the following assumptions:
- One lot represents 100 ounces.
- You buy 0.10 lot, giving you exposure to 10 ounces.
- The opening price is $2,000 per ounce.
- The margin requirement is 5%.
- Your account balance is $2,000.
All prices and margin rates in this example are illustrative. To isolate the calculations, assume used margin remains fixed and exclude spreads, commissions, swaps, credits and other account adjustments.
First, calculate the market exposure:
Position value = lots × contract size × price
0.10 × 100 × $2,000 = $20,000
Then calculate the required margin:
$20,000 × 5% = $1,000
The trade therefore creates $20,000 of exposure and reserves $1,000 of margin.
Its price sensitivity comes from the 10 ounces being traded. A $1 movement per ounce produces a $10 change in trading P&L. A $60 adverse movement produces a $600 loss, regardless of how little collateral was required to open the position.
Read Balance, Equity, Free Margin and Margin Level Together
These account figures answer different questions:
- Balance records the account’s funds after realized transactions and adjustments. It excludes the floating result of open positions.
- Equity represents the account’s current value, including floating P&L and applicable adjustments.
- Used margin is the collateral allocated to positions and any applicable order reservations.
- Free margin is equity minus used margin.
- Margin level expresses equity as a percentage of used margin.
MetaTrader 5’s account-state documentation uses the following relationships:
Free margin = equity − margin
Margin level = equity ÷ margin × 100%
For our simplified example:
Equity = balance + unrealized P&L
Immediately after opening, before any price movement or costs, equity is $2,000 and used margin is $1,000.
Free margin = $2,000 − $1,000 = $1,000
Margin level = $2,000 ÷ $1,000 × 100% = 200%
The reserved margin remains part of the account’s equity. Reserving $1,000 does not itself create a $1,000 trading loss.
Follow the Same Account as the Market Moves Against It
The distinction between free margin and margin level becomes clearer when the position starts losing money.
A $600 Floating Loss
Suppose gold falls from the hypothetical opening price of $2,000 to $1,940.
The 10-ounce position has a floating loss of:
($1,940 − $2,000) × 10 = −$600
Account equity becomes:
$2,000 − $600 = $1,400
With used margin held at $1,000:
Free margin = $1,400 − $1,000 = $400
Margin level = $1,400 ÷ $1,000 × 100% = 140%
The account still has positive free margin, but its capacity to absorb further losses has declined.
A $1,000 Floating Loss
At a hypothetical gold price of $1,900, the floating loss reaches $1,000.
Equity is now $1,000, equal to the assumed used margin.
Free margin = $1,000 − $1,000 = $0
Margin level = $1,000 ÷ $1,000 × 100% = 100%
A 100% margin level means equity equals used margin. It does not establish a universal margin-call or liquidation threshold. Those triggers depend on the provider’s rules.
A $1,500 Floating Loss
At a hypothetical gold price of $1,850, the position has lost $1,500.
Equity is $500:
Free margin = $500 − $1,000 = −$500
Margin level = $500 ÷ $1,000 × 100% = 50%
Under an assumed policy that triggers stop-out at 50%, this account has reached the forced-closure threshold.
Notice what happened: the floating loss exceeded the $1,000 initially reserved as margin. A 50% margin level also did not mean the account had lost only half its original balance. In this example, equity fell from $2,000 to $500.
These calculations illustrate the mechanism. Actual stop-out conditions and execution depend on live account figures, applicable margin requirements, costs and market prices.
A CFD Margin Call and a Stop-Out Are Different Events
A margin call is a warning or requirement to address insufficient collateral under a provider’s account rules. A stop-out is an automatic process that closes positions when the applicable threshold is reached.
The warning threshold, notification method and closure procedure vary. A fast-moving market may leave little time to respond.
Reducing exposure can release margin and limit further price sensitivity. Adding funds increases account equity after the transfer completes, but it also commits more capital to the account. Neither action guarantees that losses will stop.
With several open positions, review the account totals. A loss on one trade can reduce the equity supporting the account’s other positions.
Apply the Current MEXC CFD Rules
The published MEXC CFD account rules, checked on November 1, 2026, state that stop-out is triggered when margin level drops to 50%.
The same page states that leverage is determined by asset class and fixed by the system. Manual leverage adjustments are currently unavailable.
For an intended trade, check the instrument’s contract size, order quantity and applicable margin information. The MEXC XAUUSD CFD specifications provide these details for the gold contract. Specifications for another instrument may differ.
MEXC also explains that USDT transferred from Spot into an activated CFD account converts into USDx at a 1:1 ratio for margin and settlement. Calculate your available collateral from the CFD account’s reported figures; a separate Spot balance should not be treated as collateral already supporting the position.
If you are still choosing a provider, our comparison of platforms for CFD trading with USDT explains the broader account and pricing differences.
Product Leverage and Account Exposure Tell Different Stories
Our example uses 20:1 product leverage because $1,000 supports a $20,000 position. However, the account initially contains $2,000 of equity.
Its exposure relative to account equity is:
$20,000 ÷ $2,000 = 10 times
As losses reduce equity, that ratio rises even without opening another trade. At $1,400 of equity, the original $20,000 exposure is approximately 14.3 times equity, using the opening notional as a simplified reference.
MEXC’s view is that traders should assess required margin alongside the exposure their account must support. The margin requirement tells you whether a position can be opened; the position size and remaining equity reveal how sensitive the account is to the next market movement.
Using all available margin leaves little capacity for costs or adverse prices. Position size remains a practical control even when the product’s leverage setting is fixed.
FAQ
Is CFD Margin a Trading Fee?
No. Margin is collateral reserved to support a position. Closing a position generally releases its associated margin, while realized P&L and charges determine the account’s remaining funds.
Why Can a New Order Fail When Free Margin Is Positive?
The proposed order may require more margin than the account has available. A positive free-margin figure does not mean every order size can be accepted. Check the margin required for the specific quantity before submitting it.
Is the Minimum Deposit the Same as the CFD Margin Requirement?
No. A provider’s minimum deposit is an account or transfer condition. The margin requirement depends on the proposed trade. Your account also needs capacity to absorb trading costs and adverse movements.
Does a Higher Leverage Limit Automatically Increase My Profit?
For the same position size and price movement, dollar trading P&L is unchanged. Higher available leverage can reduce the required margin under the applicable rules. It increases price exposure only if you use that capacity to take a larger position.
Does a Stop Loss Prevent a Margin Stop-Out?
A stop loss manages a particular position’s exit. A stop-out responds to the account’s margin condition. Other positions, costs or price gaps can affect the account before a planned stop executes.
Risk Warning
CFD leverage can cause rapid losses exceeding the margin reserved for a position. Margin requirements, trading costs and adverse prices can trigger forced closures. Stops and liquidation orders may execute at worse prices during volatility or gaps. Confirm current contract specifications and account rules before trading.
