Gold CFD Trading With USDT: XAUUSD Lots and Examples
Gold CFD trading exposure depends on how much gold your order represents. On an XAUUSD contract with 100 troy ounces per lot, 0.03 lot represents three ounces. A $1 move in the gold price therefore changes the position’s price-based profit or loss by $3.
That conversion is the starting point for deciding what quantity to enter. The next steps are to connect the intended entry and stop prices to a cash loss estimate, fit the quantity to the contract’s permitted increments, and check the account’s margin requirement.
This guide uses one hypothetical gold CFD trade to work through those decisions. All prices, loss budgets and cost allowances below are illustrative, not live quotes, technical levels or trading recommendations.
Know What You Are Trading With XAUUSD
XAUUSD expresses the price of gold in US dollars per troy ounce. A hypothetical quote of 4,000.00 means $4,000 for one troy ounce; it does not mean one lot costs $4,000.
A gold CFD creates exposure to changes in that price. Buying opens a long position, while selling opens a short position. The result depends on the executed entry and exit prices, quantity and applicable charges.
You do not receive gold bars, a gold-backed token or a right to withdraw the ounces represented by the position. The ounces measure the contract’s price exposure.
Read the MEXC Gold Contract in Ounces
The MEXC XAUUSD CFD trading page, checked on November 2, 2026, displayed a contract size of 100, a minimum order size of 0.01 lot and a minimum quantity step of 0.01 lot.
For this 100-ounce contract:
- 1.00 lot represents 100 ounces.
- 0.10 lot represents 10 ounces.
- 0.03 lot represents three ounces.
- 0.01 lot represents one ounce.
Gold exposure in ounces = quantity in lots × ounces per lot
Each $1 move per ounce changes price-based P&L by the number of ounces represented. At 0.03 lot, a $10 move corresponds to $30; at 0.10 lot, the same move corresponds to $100.
These are price-based changes before separate charges. A favorable move benefits a long position and hurts a short position; an unfavorable move does the reverse.
Write the Price Distance Before Counting “Pips”
Do not carry the conventional EUR/USD pip size of 0.0001 into a gold calculation.
For example, an XAUUSD move from 4,000.50 to 4,001.50 is $1 per ounce. On the three-ounce position, that produces a $3 change in price-based P&L.
If a platform field measures distance in increments of 0.01, that $1 distance corresponds to 100 such increments. A field using a different increment requires a different input.
Write down the intended price level and confirm the field’s unit. MetaTrader 5’s specifications distinguish decimal digits, point size and minimum tick size. The number of displayed decimal places alone does not tell you how an order-distance field is configured.
For the currency-pair calculation, see Forex CFD Trading: Lots, Pips and Profit Calculations.
Build a Gold CFD Trading Order From a Cash Budget
Assume the following hypothetical long trade:
- Expected buy fill: 4,000.50.
- Intended stop exit: 3,988.50.
- Intended target exit: 4,024.50.
- Planned cash loss budget: $50.
- Allowance for separate charges and possible execution differences: $3.
- Contract size: 100 ounces per lot.
- Permitted quantity step: 0.01 lot.
The $3 allowance is an example planning input, not a published MEXC fee or a guaranteed limit on execution costs. The entry and stop are assumed execution prices, so their difference already captures the price-based loss calculation.
Calculate the Distance to the Stop
Stop distance = 4,000.50 − 3,988.50 = $12 per ounce
At one full lot, that movement would produce a price-based loss of:
$12 × 100 = $1,200
The position quantity must therefore be a fraction of a lot if it is to fit the example’s $50 budget.
Fit the Quantity to the Permitted Step
First deduct the assumed allowance:
$50 − $3 = $47 available for the planned price-based loss
Then calculate the unrounded quantity:
Lots = amount available for price-based loss ÷ (stop distance × ounces per lot)
$47 ÷ ($12 × 100) ≈ 0.03917 lot
The checked contract accepts quantities in 0.01-lot increments. Rounding down gives 0.03 lot.
At 0.03 lot:
Planned price-based loss = $12 × 100 × 0.03 = $36
Including the assumed allowance:
$36 + $3 = $39
Rounding up to 0.04 lot would produce:
$12 × 100 × 0.04 + $3 = $51
That would exceed the original $50 budget under the same assumptions.
If the calculated quantity falls below the minimum permitted order, rounding up can defeat the loss constraint. Changing the stop merely to fit a larger quantity also changes the trade being evaluated.
Check Margin Separately
The three-ounce position has an opening notional value of:
4,000.50 × 3 = $12,001.50
Neither the $39 planned loss estimate nor the $12,001.50 notional is automatically the required margin. Margin depends on the applicable contract and account rules.
Check the actual margin requirement and the CFD account’s available funds. CFD Margin and Leverage Explained: Formulas & Examples explains how those figures relate to account equity and forced closure.
MEXC’s view is that the minimum quantity and quantity step are part of the risk calculation. A quantity accepted by the platform can still be too large for a particular loss budget. The useful result is a quantity that fits the stated assumptions, with enough account capacity to support it.
Calculate the Long and Short Outcomes
For a linear gold CFD quoted in dollars per ounce:
Long price-based P&L = (exit sell price − entry buy price) × ounces
For the hypothetical 0.03-lot long, an exit at the intended target gives:
(4,024.50 − 4,000.50) × 3 = $72
An exit at the intended stop gives:
(3,988.50 − 4,000.50) × 3 = −$36
These results depend on receiving those exact fills. The target and stop do not establish their own probability of being reached, and the stop estimate does not guarantee a maximum loss.
For a short position, reverse the subtraction:
Short price-based P&L = (entry sell price − exit buy price) × ounces
A separate hypothetical three-ounce short, sold at 4,020.00 and bought back at 4,008.00, produces:
(4,020.00 − 4,008.00) × 3 = $36
If it instead closes at 4,032.00, the price-based loss is $36. Commissions and any swap adjustments must still be reconciled.
Apply the Gold CFD Trading Example on MEXC
The MEXC CFD product page explains that eligible users can activate a CFD account and transfer USDT from Spot. The transferred funds convert 1:1 into USDx for CFD margin and settlement.
USDT provides the transfer route into the account. It does not change the XAUUSD quote from dollars per ounce or the quantity field from lots into dollars.
For a gold CFD order, work through the ticket in this sequence:
- Select XAUUSD in the CFD market and open Info. Confirm the current contract size, minimum quantity and quantity step.
- Calculate the intended ounces and the cash effect of the planned price movement. The worked example uses 0.03 lot, representing three ounces.
- Choose the order type. A market order requests execution at available prices; a buy limit can specify a lower intended entry but may remain unfilled.
- Enter TP/SL in the unit required by the interface. For the example’s long position, the assumed stop price is 3,988.50 and target price is 4,024.50.
- Review required margin, available CFD funds and the current trading session before submitting an order.
- After execution, verify the actual fill, filled quantity and accepted TP/SL levels. Recalculate the cash distances if the fill differs from the assumed entry.
A pending order is not an open position. Check its status before assuming that gold exposure exists.
To exit an existing position, select that position and use its close function. MEXC supports independent long and short CFD positions, so opening a fresh opposite order can leave both positions open.
Recalculate When the Spread or Holding Period Changes
The quoted spread is a price difference per ounce. Its cash impact scales with the number of ounces represented.
Suppose the hypothetical buy fill is 4,000.50 and the simultaneous sell quote is 4,000.00. Immediately closing the three-ounce position at that unchanged sell quote would produce:
(4,000.00 − 4,000.50) × 3 = −$1.50
If the buy quote is higher when the order executes, the distance to a fixed stop can also be larger. Recalculate from the fill instead of retaining the earlier loss estimate.
When P&L is calculated from actual entry and exit fills, the spread is already reflected in those prices. Add separate charges according to the account records, without subtracting the same spread again. See CFD Trading Costs Explained: Spreads, Fees and Swaps for the detailed reconciliation.
A longer holding period introduces another input: overnight swap. Check the current rate for the position’s direction and the designated charging day. A short gold position should not automatically be assumed to earn a swap credit.
Also check the last executable trading time. A plan to close before a swap cutoff only works if the contract is still open for trading and the exit actually executes. CFD Trading Hours: Forex, Gold, Oil and Indices explains how to coordinate the session, timezone and settlement clock.
FAQ
Is Gold CFD Trading With USDT the Same as a Gold Perpetual?
No. An XAUUSD CFD and a USDT-margined gold perpetual are different contracts. Their account structure, quantity units, charges and trading schedules can differ. Use the CFD specification for the XAUUSD order rather than borrowing the rules of another gold product.
What Happens to the Calculation After a Partial Close?
Recalculate using the remaining ounces. If a partial close is available and one ounce of the example’s three-ounce long closes at 4,012.50, that portion realizes $12 before separate charges.
Two ounces remain. If they later close at the original stop of 3,988.50, they lose $24. The combined price-based result is therefore −$12. Taking a partial profit does not guarantee that the overall trade finishes profitable.
Why Might the Platform Reject a Gold CFD Stop Price?
The stop may violate the symbol’s minimum distance, use the wrong price side or be entered in the wrong unit. MetaTrader 5 identifies these restrictions in the symbol specification. Check the rejection message and contract settings, then recalculate the trade if the intended stop must change.
Why Is the Executable Gold Price Different From a Chart Quote?
Compare the symbol, timestamp and quote basis first. A chart can display Bid or another reference, while a buy executes against available Ask prices. A headline gold quote is not necessarily the price available for your particular CFD order. Use the execution record when calculating the result.
Risk Warning
Gold CFDs are leveraged derivatives and do not provide ownership of physical gold. Actual losses can exceed a planned stop estimate because of gaps, slippage, charges or forced liquidation. The examples do not demonstrate a tested strategy or guarantee any outcome. Confirm current contract conditions and product availability for your account and location.
